Operation Overview
From the Early hours of March 19th 2003, Coalition forces began the opening stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Special forces teams and supporting elements from the UK, USA, Australia and Poland moved to secure key oil infrastructure across Iraq to prevent the Saddam Regime from burning their own oil – a lesson learnt from Operation Desert Storm. Whilst the SF teams successfully secured the major sites, the smaller (yet important) oil storage facility of Shapur is still yet to be secured. The USMC MEU has been given the task of securing Shapur on the 20th March.
